Desert needlegrass (Achnatherum speciosum)

Green seed spikes in spring.

As the spring warms to summer, the seeds open up to reveal long hairs along the awns. Owens Valley Paiute collected he seeds for food.

Bunches on a rocky hill. Desert needlegrass grows commonly on hills from 3,000 to 6,000 feet.
